Nathaniel Caauwe
I'm a visual effects artist working as a compositor from Nebraska.
I started out experimenting with lightsaber effects on clips I'd film in the backyard and it kind of got out of hand. I decided to specialize in rotoscoping as I figured it was a good way to get into the industry, just in time for 3D conversion to explode, and I managed to complete a Bucket List item by working on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when I was 22. In 2013, I took a break from VFX and landed in web design and development. I picked up a handful of programming languages, but within a year or two, found the allure of film calling me again.
I decided I'd more actively pursue compositing this time, and within months of quitting my web design job, purchased my own copy of Nuke and brought my love of Python along for the ride. A year-and-a-half into this new foray landed me at Digital Domain. Several flights back and forth between my home state of Nebraska and about 9 months later, I became a resident of Los Angeles. I proceeded to bounce between studios as a compositor, but continued to do some roto from home between bookings.
Eventually I found a long-term home at Zoic Studios, where I freelanced almost exclusively from the end of 2018 through 2021. In the midst of the COVID lockdown of 2020, I moved back home to Nebraska, while remaining with Zoic as a remote freelancer. At the beginning of 2022, I converted to a staff position as a Lead Compositor, where I remained until May 2023.
Please feel free to poke around at my most recent work, some personal projects, and drop me a line if you’d like to enlist my compositing services.
